Facebook is retiring its email service immediately,an announcement by the company said on Monday.
Any emails that will be sent to users @facebook.com address will now be forwarded to the email address that users signed while signing up for their Facebook account.
Why Facebook is retiring its email service? There is a simple reason for this. Facebook email was not being used by anyone. A Facebook spokesperson told tech blog Re/code.
“We’re making this change because most people haven’t been using their Facebook email address, and we can focus on improving our mobile messaging experience for everyone.”
Facebook email was launched in 2010 but has failed to pick up and with the relative success of Facebook Messenger and the recent $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp, it appears that Facebook is more focused with messaging and has stopped flirting with the idea of having its own email and compete with Gmail and other webmail services.
