FBI Advises to Pay Hackers in Case of Ransomware

According to latest advice from FBI, if your computer is held in hostage by a hacker via ransomware, the best course of action is to pay up to the hackers.

At the 2015 Cyber Security summit, Joseph Bonavolonta, Assistan Special Agent at FBI advised that companies should consider conceding to hackers’ demands if their computers are infected with ransomware.

Ransomware is a hacking software which encrypts a victim’s hard drive and the key to decrypt is only available with the hackers which they are willing to give only for payment. The payment can be as high as $10,000. According to reports one such software named Cyrtowall has so far earned hackers over $18 million in ransom since April 2014.

However, you can drastically reduce the chances of your computer data become hostage by following simple information security advice: Keep antivirus and firewall updated, keep popup blockers enabled, Always keep backups of your important data and always click on links with skepticism.
