This new service is being called “Netflix for Pirates.” This is an app named Popcorn that you can download to your desktop and stream movies directly based on BitTorrent protocol, Torrentfreak has reported.
Popcorn time does acknowledge that the service it is offering may not be allowed legally in some countries. However, the developers of the app are not worried about Hollywood going after them because they consider it an experimental app which is free and open source and they are not making any profit out of it. But that is hardly an argument because Warez community also believes in sharing without the profit motive in mind.
One of the developers of Popcorn Time told Torrentfreak:
“We don’t host anything, and none of the developers makes any money. There are no ads, no premium accounts, and no subscription fees or anything like that. It’s an experiment to learn and share.”
Apparently movie studios are going to have a hard time taking the app down. But given the fact that movie studios have sued torrent users individually in the past, caution is advised if it is illegal to use torrents for personal use in your country.
Having said that, we have tested the app and it is no less than Netflix for Pirates.
