Google Doodle Goes Gay for Sochi Games

google doodle gay sochi gamesOn this Friday Google Doodle was rainbow-colored showing support for gay rights at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

The Google Doodle image features athletes competing at the Olympics in the word Google. The background is rainbow. Google has also posted a quote from the Olympic charter below the Doodle which speaks of non-discriminatory nature of Olympics sport movement. The quote reads:

“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

The anti-gay government sentiment of Russia has become a big issue since last summer when Russian government enacted a “gay propaganda” law which is aimed against exhibitions of non traditional lifestyles in front of children and minors.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, has defended the law and policy but pointed out at the same time that homosexuality is not illegal in Russia. He welcomed gays at the Sochi games but urged them to be away from children.

The International Olympic Committee has asked competing athletes to remain apolitical during the Sochi games which has earned ire of the gay-rights advocates.
