In contrast to Apple, Mozilla has eyes fixed on cheap smartphones and has announced a deal with a Chinese chipset maker Spreadtrum for a smartphone chip, SC6821, that will make way for cheap $25 smartphones. Mozilla made this announcement at the Mobile World Congress and said that the phone will be powered by Firefox Flame OS.
Mozilla has also claimed that it has received interest in this cheap smartphone from mobile carriers like Telkomsel, Telenor and Indosat. It also tried to addressed the worries of not having a strong ecosystem for its Mozilla Flame OS by saying that apps ecosystems like Polytron, Thundersoft and T2Mobile have expressed interest in these devices.
Firefox Flame OS is already powering mobile devices in 15 countries and three devices but Mozilla is aiming at significant expansion by launching this in Latin American markets.
These cheap smartphones based Firefox OS will not be a threat to Apple but Android has to look for these because Android also has a significant low prices smartphones market.
