‘Netflix of Piracy’, Popcorn Time Dead Within 4 Days

Popcorn Time, the free and open source bittorrent based streaming project which was dubbed as Netflix of torrent world, is gone. The website of Popcorn Time reads:

“Popcorn Time is shutting down today. Not because we ran out of energy, commitment, focus or allies. But because we need to move on with our lives.”

Popcorn Time was quietly launched but within a few days, it had gained widespread popularity. The blog post by the developers reads that Popcorn Time “got installed on every single country on Earth. Wen the two that don’t have internet access.”

The creators of Popcorn Time had maintained from the start that it was legal depending on the country you are in. However, the developers were being constantly questioned about the legal status of Popcorn Time which they said they had not anticipated.

However, the kind of popularity it gained can almost ensure that it will continue to live on. The installer is not available on the website but it can be easily found on the internet. The huge success of Popcorn clearly demonstrated that there is clear demand for this bittorrent based streaming app. So we can almost certainly expect similar apps taking it forward.
