Microsoft announcement this figure on Twitter:

Office apps for iPad were released by Microsoft last week. Microsoft has taken the risk that by using office for iPad, users will move away from competing products i.e Google Docs and iWorks from Apple.
These apps have been made available for iPad as freemiums which mean that users can download the apps for free and view any presentation or documentation in Excel, Word or Powerpoint format. However, if the user wants to edit the document or presentation, he will require to have a monthly subscription to Office 365 which costs $10 per month or $99 per year.
It is definitely a very encouraging number for the Microsoft but the company had not divulged any details about how many of these 12 million users also subscribed to Office 365.
