After Spotify’s announcement of offering unlimited desktop music streaming, Rdio also announced today that music streaming is now free and unlimited via its desktop website. The new service is ad-supported.
Previously users were required to pay $9.99 per month for listening unlimited music. Users were able to start a free trial for six months but after that they either had to buy a subscription or create a new account to keep listening to music.
With the new ad supported unlimited music streaming service, users will have to listen to in-stream messages from partner brands and other notifications etc.
The mobile service of Rdio remains a subscription service. The users on mobile are able to listen to a restricted preset stations but can not create their own playlists and neither they can browse for music. Spotify allowed users recently to browse music on their mobile apps but still offline listening options is not available to mobile users.
