In a big step towards making virtual reality mainstream, Samsung and Oculus VR, owned by Facebook, have unveiled a new iteration of Gear VR headset. The headset is priced at $99 and is compatible with all Samsung Galaxy phones of 2015 which include, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Galaxy Note 5.
The new Gear VR headset is 22 percent lighter than its predecessor and is more comfortable. It also has a back button, a trackpad, a motion sensor with ability to understand gyroscopic position and acceleration. However, it will still need the power and screen resolution of a smartphone and require that phones be docked inside the Gear VR headset using a MicroUSB.
The content is an area where the progress has been slow when it comes to virtual reality. However, Oculus have announced their recent partnerships with Lions Gate Entertainment Corp and Twentieth Century Fox for bringing big movies to the Gear VR. Some of these include Pulp Fiction, Alient Tilogy and Hunger Games series. Oculus has also announced its partnership with popular game Minecraft, which is now owned by Microsoft for bringing the game to Gear VR.
