More than half a million Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatches have been ordered so far this year and Samsung has a comfortable 70 percent of the market share, according to data from Strategy Analytics. The number of shipments of smartwatches has increased by 250 percent in the first quarter of this year.
However, Samsung’s strong dominance might slip a bit when more companies introduce their products.
Many companies including Sony have already smartwatches in the market but it seems they are not doing quite as well as Samsung. There are chances that the smartwatches market will change significantly when finally Google’s OS for smartwatches named Wear. It is, however, yet to be seen if the early adopters of the OS will gain as much advantage as in the case of HTC or other early adopters of Android OS for smartphones.
Thare are other market players too, the most well known of them being Pebble. But do not discount Apple at all. There have been rumors for quite some time about an Apple wearable smartwatch but still there is not official confirmation of this from Apple.
Market analysts have predicted that the smartphone shipments will triple this year and by 2018 as many as 112 million smartwatches will be shipped yearly.
