Sears Department Store has said that it is investigating a possible security breach to determine if it was a victim like Target Corporation last year when it suffered a previously unprecedented cyber attack from hackers.
A Sears spokesman, Howard Riefs has said in a statement:
“There have been rumors and reports throughout the retail industry of security incidents at various retailers and we are actively reviewing our systems to determine if we have been a victim of a breach. We have found no information based on our review of our systems to date indicating a breach.”
Sears Holdings Corp is one of the biggest stores chains and has currently 2,500 stores across U.S. and Canada.
In a separate news Bloomberg News, citing sources familiar with the investigation, had reported on Friday that Sears was under investigation by U.S. Secret Service for a potential security breach.
U.S. Secret service is also conducting investigation into last year’s security breach at Target in which the credit card data of more than 40 million customers was compromised. Personally identifiable information of more than 70 million people was also stolen.
