Skype’s blog, Facebook page and its Twitter account were hacked earlier in the day by a hacker group known as Syrian Electronic Army. The messages posted on these accounts after the hacking are critical of Microsoft for sharing Skype users data with the governments. The tweet posted on Skype Twitter account by the hackers and then retweeted about 7000 times said:
“Don’t use Microsoft emails(hotmail, outlook),They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments.More details soon #SEA“.
Microsoft did not offer any immediate comment on the hacking but Skype issued the following statement while emphasizing that no user data was compromised as a result of hacking:
“We recently became aware of a targeted cyber attack that led to access to Skype’s social media properties, but these credentials were quickly reset.”
Later into the day SEA also posted the company email address, office number and phone number of Steve Ballmer.
The SEA in the past has crippled many social media accounts of organizations it suspects of siding with the Syrian rebels and its favorite targets are US military and news outlets. It crippled New York Times website last summer and hacked Twitter account of Associated Press last summer.
