This is a follow up move to an earlier announcement by Spotify last month that iOS and Android users can user its service for free whereas a subscription was required in the past. However, there is a catch here that users are not permitted to select the exact song out the playlist and the songs just play on shuffle. Spotify app downloads increased by 4 times after this announcement by Spotify.
The free mobile service now brings Spotify in direct competition to iTunes Radio which is currently limited to only being available in US and will move to other English speaking countries during early this year.
Spotify said in a blog post that there was a restriction in the past relating to number of hours you could listen music after the six month unlimited period. But now the company said all limits had been removed.
Spotify is currently one of the largest music streaming service with presence in 55 countries and active 24 million users. Its rival Pandora claims 72.4 million active listeners.
