Woman Wins $500,000 in Revenge Porn Case Against Ex

A Texas woman has been awarded $500,000 in case involving revenge porn, ABC has reported. The woman, whose identity is withheld, got the award against his ex boyfriend of seven years who posted intimate pictures and videos from their relationship after the couple broke-up.

The woman has told ABC that “He would update me on how many people had seen it, or downloaded it.”

The ex-boyfriend of the woman will appeal the verdict but this is a rare win in cases involving revenge porn. A similar case was thrown out by the court last year in New York which was based on laws relating to public display of offensive content and harassment.

In the absence of laws governing revenge porn, the victims have not been able to get relief from courts. New Jersey is the only state where it is illegal to share and distribute “intimate” pictures or videos without the consent of the person featured in the pictures or videos.

California has also passed a similar law in 2013 with a maximum jail term of 6 months and a fine of $1,000 but it also leaves a large part of what comprises revenge porn out of its coverage. The critics of the law have argued that these laws can be used as a cudgel to remove genuinely legal content from internet. Illinois senate has also passed a legislation which will make it illegal to post sexually intimate pictures without someone’s consent.
